Building a Dream House - A Miniature One!

Have you ever wanted to build your own dream house – a miniature one?

Maybe you are looking at making a dollhouse for a special little person in your life?

We have spent countless hours on Pinterest..

Discovering everything there is to know about this world of miniature homes, and I’m not talking about the tiny home where people live in a small space much similar to that of a caravan, I’m talking about a miniature house on a 1:12 scale that resembles a real-life home!

The Miniature House aka Doll House challenge

So after spending hours on Pinterest and Instagram, we here at Elle Cherie have decided to take on the challenge of building our very own miniature house and sharing the journey with you all, here on the blog and over on our Instagram page. (click now to follow us)

Why make a Miniature House?

Great question! We first discovered a miniature home while scrolling through Instagram – this is one of our favourite accounts – Lavender Belle Miniatures, and it looked just like a real home! We wanted to find out more!

We got excited! And the more we looked into these miniature homes, the more we wanted to take on the challenge and attempt to make one ourselves. By sharing the details of our miniature home, we hope that it will inspire you to DIY one if you want to make one too.

What is the plan?

Our vision board is made up of images to provide inspiration and ideas. The theme for our home is a character beach house. It will be built on two levels incorporating an open lounge, dining and kitchen on the ground floor and a bathroom and bedroom on the top floor.

Materials for a Miniature Dream House

Materials we have purchased for our dream house so far include a storage shelf measuring 63cm wide by 29cm depth and 63cm high from The Warehouse. We will be using this as the shell of our house. You can also get similar ones from Amazon like this one.

A range of items needed for this project include:

Balsa wood
PVA Glue
Glue gun
Craft knife
Spakfilla
Staple Gun
Tape measure
Foam Board
A variety of decor adhesive
Match sticks
Ice block sticks
Paint
Paint Brushes
Lights (if you wish to use them) You can use string lights or tea light candles (you will see more on this later)

I am sure further down the track we will need more items, but this is what is required to start the build.

Colour Scheme

Choosing colours is a lot of fun, and we have found some inspirational colours from Resene, which are neutral but have beachy tones. The ones we have opted for:

Resene Alabaster – trims, windows and doors
Resene Duck Egg Blue – Bathroom and kitchen areas
Resene Quater Truffle – Walls in Lounge and bedroom
